Annual Fee: When Is It Worth Paying?

A simple framework to decide if a premium card's annual fee is justified by the rewards and benefits you'll actually use.

The Break-Even Question

The core question is simple: will you earn more in rewards than you pay in fees? This is the break-even point.

Formula: Break-even monthly spend = Annual Fee ÷ Average Reward Rate ÷ 12

Example: A card with SAR 1,200 annual fee and 3% average cashback rate needs SAR 1,200 ÷ 0.03 ÷ 12 = SAR 3,333 monthly spend to break even. If you spend more than that, the card is profitable. If less, you're paying more in fees than you earn.

Mustafeed's calculator does this math for you automatically — but understanding the principle helps you think clearly about any card.

Beyond Rewards: Valuing Card Perks

Some premium cards offer perks worth far more than the fee — but only if you actually use them.

High-value perks to consider: Airport lounge access (SAR 200-400 per visit saved), travel insurance (SAR 500-2,000 if you'd buy it anyway), purchase protection, and free supplementary cards for family.

Perks that seem valuable but often aren't: Concierge services (most people never call), golf access (unless you play regularly), valet parking (limited locations).

The honesty test: Before counting a perk's value, ask yourself: 'Would I pay for this separately if the card didn't offer it?' If yes, count it. If no, it's a nice-to-have, not a reason to pay the fee.

Fee Waiver: The Hidden Benefit

Many Saudi banks waive the annual fee if you meet a spending threshold. This is often not advertised prominently but can be negotiated.

Common thresholds: SAR 100,000 - 200,000 annual spend for premium cards. Some banks waive fees for salary transfer customers or government employees.

Negotiation tip: Call your bank before renewal and ask for a fee waiver. Banks would rather keep you as a customer than lose you over a fee. If you have a good payment history and decent spend, you have leverage.

Mustafeed shows fee waiver thresholds on each card page so you know exactly what's needed.
